LANDSCAPES

The pinhole camera is unique in its ability to capture landscapes. The rudimentary nature of cameras means that only pure, unadulterated light will enter the camera. The soft focus quality of the images – the blurring of the details – inexplicably allows the true "feeling" of the landscape to reveal itself. Unlike conventional photography, the long exposures required for the pinhole camera add an element of time to the images. Images become cinematic as the pinhole blurs the line between landscape and dreamscape.

This collection began as a search for the mythical stories I concocted in my childhood. Simple icons in our landscape – country roads to nowhere, picket fences, waves crashing on a beach – seemed to take on a higher meaning with elaborate stories contained within. This body of work seeks to reveal the simple but profound symbols and stories in the landscape around us.
